I am planning this trail as an option to walk in 2026. Note that in two places the trail is closed to the west of Rostock. The first is near the Gespenseterwald near Neinhagen, the second between Kühlungsborn and Rerik. To avoid these closures I am considering taking a train to Rostock from Warnemünde, then another to Bad Doberan. From there I might take a return trip to Heiligendamm and perhaps Külungsborn on the steam train, then continue by train to Wismar, and from there another return train journey to Schwerin. I’ll walk the section Wismar to Travemünde. It would be a shame not to visit Rügen Island while I’m nearby, so I’ll take the train and bus from Stralsund to Kap Arkona, and mostly walk from there to at least Prora via the Jasmund National Park. I might extend that section to take in Jagdschloss Granitz and end in Sellin, before heading back by bus/train to Stralsund and continuing by foot to Warnemünde.
