Rijksmuseum Amsterdam

Rijksmuseum Amsterdam

The Rijksmuseum Amsterdam has one of the best collections of Dutch masterpieces, art and history objects from the middle ages to present times.

The Rijksmuseum Amsterdam is both a museum and gallery. There are many paintings from the Dutch Golden Age by artists like Rembrandt and Johannes Vermeer. The complete collection of about 8000 objects spans 800 years of Dutch history from the middle ages to Mondriaan. The centrepiece is the Gallery of Honour where you will see The Nightwatch (Rembrandt, 1642), The Milkmaid (Vermeer, 1657) and The Threatened Swan (Asselijn, 1650).

Personal Notes

This is probably the most famous museum and gallery in The Netherlands. It has a vast collection including several world-famous pieces. The Night Watch by Rembrandt is probably the most famous painting. I recommend going in the off-season if you are living in The Netherlands and have a Museumkaart. My most recent visit was at 14:00 in mid April and the museum was full. It was also humid inside. Try going in the morning. There's so much to see I'll probably write an article on in separately later. However a good place to start is the main 'Gallery of Honour' on the second floor. I'm lucky because I live nearby and can visit for free with the museumkaart. I wanted to see the cannon which was found at the bottom of the Haarlemmermeer. It dates from the 1570s and the war with the Spanish. Schiphol Airport now sits where the lake once was.
