NS Wandeling Helderse Duinen

NS Wandeling Helderse Duinen

   16 km

The NS Wandeling Helderse Duinen is a 16km walking route joining Den Helder Zuid and Den Helder, the historical base of the Dutch Navy. Walking along the dyke, you pass Fort Erfprins and the Lange Jaap lighthouse before reaching Fort Kijkduin. Then it’s a leisurely walk through the Helderse and Donkere Duinen, Helderse Vallei and De Nollen nature reserves.

I walk the NS Wandeling Helderse Duinen route in the opposite direction, prefering to end in the nature section rather than the city. I also like to wander around the former naval base of Willemsoord Harbour and visit the Marinemuseum, which opens at 10am. The train journey takes about 1.5 hours from Amsterdam Centraal.

Route Summary

Den Helder has been a historical assembly point for the Dutch fleet. Napoleon ordered the creation of Willemsoord dockyards, Fort Lasalle (now Erfprins) and Fort Kijkduin in 1811.

Walking along the dyke you will see Texel and the uninhabited Noorderhaaks or Raging Bull to it's left. The imposing cast-iron lighthouse 55m tall Lange Jaap will soon come into view, which you pass before reaching Huisduinen village, the oldest human habitation of this area.

The protected Helderse Duinen joins with the forested Donkere Duinen before reachin the Helserse Vallei and the man-made De Nollen nature reserve.
