NS Wandeling De Bretten

NS Wandeling De Bretten

   10 km

The NS Wandeling De Bretten is a 10km walking route joining Halfweg-Zwanenburg with Sloterdijk stations. It follows the historical road, canal and first Dutch railway between Amsterdam and Haarlem, passing diverse areas of cutural and natural interest including the Spaarndammerdijk, Haarlemmertrekvaart, Brettenburg and De Lange Bretten.

This walking route is fun to do with children. You will find a Trekpont (manual cable ferry) along the NS Wandeling De Bretten, and pass by the playground of Brettenburg park.

Route Summary

At Halfweg-Zwanenburg, the route follows the remain of the 13th century Spaarndammerdijk, once the only land route between Amsterdam and Haarlem.

Passing under the A5 motorway, the walking route reaches a Trekpont and the nature areas of De Lange Bretten park. To the south is the Haarlemmertrekvaart canal built for shipping in 1631, but made obsolete by The Netherlands first railway line built here to connect Amsterdam and Haarlem in 1839.

Later you reach the playground and hills of Brettenburg park. This is an overgrown 1970s dump site of Waterlooplein construction materials; look for bricks between the trees.
