NS Wandeling Amsterdam Westerborkpad

NS Wandeling Amsterdam Westerborkpad

   11 km

The NS Wandeling Amsterdam Westerborkpad is an 11km walking route joining Centraal and Muiderpoort stations. It passes several monuments related to the Holocaust including the Anne Frank Huis, Auschwitz and Dock Worker momuments, and areas of historical significance including the Jewish Quarter, Historical Museum and Portugese Synagogue.

I have slightly modified the official NS Wandeling Amsterdam Westerborkpad route to take the walker past two monuments related to Dutch colonialism and slavery. Without diminishing the significance of the Holocaust, I’d like to walker to contemplate what humans are capable of doing to each other when we separate ourselves along religious, racist or other perceived divisions.

Route Summary

From Centraal Station, the route enters the Grachtengordel (Canal Belt) where the Anne Frank House, Westerkerk and De 9 Straatjes (9 Streets) shopping district are found.

It proceeds to the Rembrandtplein, crossing the Amstel to the Jewish Resistance Monument, Stopera and Hermitage before entering the historical Jewish Quarter. The Jewish Historical Museum, Portuguese Synagogue, Auschwitz monument, Resistance Museum and Hollandsche Schouwburg are here.

Proceeding east, the route reaches the Transvaalbuurt, the scene of the June 1943 Razzia where 5542 Jews were surprised and rounded up at dawn to be transported to Westerbork.
