NS Noord Hollands Duinreservaat

NS Noord-Hollands Duinreservaat

The 16.5 km long NS Noord-Hollands Duinreservaat trail connects Castricum with Egmond aan Zee and Alkmaar. The route has forest, dunes and fields.

The NS Noord-Hollands Duinreservaat walking starts in Castricum. To enter the nature reserve, you need to buy a ‘Duinkaart’ which costs about €1.80. You will pass through forest areas where you may see Scottish Highlander cows. The track occasionally opens to dune areas before reaching the De Hoep visitor centre near Bakkum. It re-enters forest before opening into the largest dune area of the walk. There are plenty of bird watching opportunities along the route. Eventually you reach the seaside village of Egmond aan Zee. A bus will take you from there to Alkmaar train station.

Personal Notes

Walked this route together with my wife who found it easier than NS Kennemerduinen. At station Castricum you will find the North Holland Archaeology Museum Huis van Hilde. A little further is the Strandvondstenmuseum. Neither are part of Museumkaart, but might be worth visiting. I didn't visit this time around. You can buy the Duinkaart at the ticket-machine, or buy it online. We lost the path at the early stage, but from then on the walking path was well signposted. we encountered Scottish Highlander cows beside and on the path in the forest. You are advised to keep 25 meters away. We went off-piste to get around them. The walking route goes into dune areas while staying close to forest until you reach the De Hoep visitor centre. There is also a restaurant here. I think Camping Bakkum is nearby so it could get busy later in the year. The forest section after De Hoep is picturesque. We stopped for lunch in the dunes area soon after. There were a lot of jet planes flying overhead. It looked like there was a near-miss. The final stretch is exposed to the sun. In summer it might get hot - bring enough water. Egmond aan Zee looks like a typical tourist sea-side village. The track is close to the beach so a swim is a possibility. The 165 bus will take you directly to Alkmaar station. Contact email and phone is for the De Hoep Visitor Centre.
