Amstelpark Amsterdam

Amstelpark

The 4 km Amstelpark Amsterdam walking route is a loop-walk that passes by the Maze, Amstel-train, oranjerie, Rhododendron Valley and children’s playground.

The Amstelpark is a park in Amsterdam-Zuid. The park includes a maze, several cafés, galleries, an orangery, a petting zoo, children’s playground and a mini-golf course. The Rhododendron garden is amazing when in full-bloom in April and May. A children’s train line runs around the park, passing the Rosarium and Riekermolen windmill.

Personal Notes

One of my favourite parks because of its landscaping and interesting areas. There are several entrances to the park, I use the north entrance, however the map shows the Rosarium. The Maze is fun for the kids and if it's running, the Amsteltrein (train) is worth a ride. When I visited in early April the Orangerie still had the plants indoors, however over summer it is a nice place to sit in the sun. Soon after the Glazen Huis gallery you enter a wild area which is one of my year-round favourite areas. As you exit this you are near the Rhododendron garden which is a must to see in April and May. The view to the Riekermolen windmill is quite often spoiled by tourist buses but there is also a Stork in its nest here. Along the banks of the Amstel you will pass a field of chairs that is a monument to resistance fighters executed by the Germans in the last days of WWII. A loop around the big pond takes you past the Japanese gardens and eventually to the Wallaby enclosure. You pass a midget golf course and a pole showing NAP (Sea Level) and the hight of various floods over the centuries. The top field is one large children's play area with petting zoo and a small amusement park with several rides.
